My Top 5 Tips for Optimising Hormone Health & Fertility

February 14, 2023 Melinda McDonald

Melinda McDonald applying acupuncture and moxibustion to acupuncture points to help stimulate circulation to the ovaries and uterus

This goes for both women and men. Remember it takes 2 to tango!

The precise details will be different for each individual but here is a good overall guide to get you started.

Remember to also consult your doctor and do some important preconception screening for any infections and some basic blood tests to check before you even start trying.

I also recommend that women track their Basal Body Temperature along with signs and symptoms to get to know their cycle. Timing is critical and I give advice on when is the best time to try each cycle.

Ok, I only said 5 tips, so I’ll stop there for now. So many things you can do to help support your hormone health and chances of conception and a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby.

There is no magic one size fits all herb or supplement or fad diet. A tailored treatment plan is always the best approach.

Book in for an Initial Consultation today if you really want to get things started.

In the meantime, here are my top 5 tips for optimising hormone health and fertility…

1. Nutrient Dense Diet

  • Please don’t skip meals. I don’t recommend intermittent fasting or fad diets for women trying to balance their hormones or trying to conceive.

  • Eat a balanced nutrient dense diet with sufficient calories. Your body won’t feel “safe” if you don’t eat enough food and regularly. Skipping meals will “stress'“ your body, raise cortisol levels and negatively impact hormones. You may even not ovulate or have delayed or no period.

  • Make sure you’re eating at least 30g of protein with every meal.

  • Preferably cooked and easy to digest foods for maximum absorption.

  • Cold food = cold womb, so please avoid those raw cold iced smoothies. Think soups, stews, bone broths and slow cooking.

2. Sufficient Sleep

  • Ensure you have adequate sleep and rest for optimal hormone production and cell health.

  • No devices or mobile phones (blue light) at least 1 hour before bed otherwise it may interfere with your melatonin which helps with sleep.

  • Lights out by 11pm. Preferably 10pm.

  • Extra tip: try to get some sunshine within the first hour of waking to help reset your circadium rhythm.

3. Reduce Stress

  • Minimise stress or balance your stress with exercise, meditation or relaxing activities (or acupuncture)

  • The more activity up there (in your head). The less activity down there (reproductive organs).

  • Prioritise making a baby above your work.

  • Exercise regularly to improve overall circulation, wellbeing and mental health.

4. Reduce Toxins

  • No smoking or alcohol.

  • Minimal caffeine (make sure you have coffee after food, not on an empty stomach, otherwise you will spike your cortisol levels and wreak havoc on your hormones). I usually suggest only 1 cup of good quality, chemical-free coffee per day. In some cases you may be better without coffee at all.

  • Avoid environmental pollutants and endocrine disrupters.

  • Healthy cells = healthy eggs/sperm/baby.

5. Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, Supplements

  • In-depth consultation and blood testing to identify any imbalances, areas to work on, and nutritional deficiencies.

  • A good prenatal supplement with natural folate is essential. Check labelling, if it has ‘folic acid’ throw it out. I recommend Naturobest Preconception Multivitamin, there is one for Women and one for Men with different nutritional needs.

  • Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help to improve ovarian function, blood flow to the uterus and sperm health.

  • For preconception planning it is ideal to start at least 3 months before you even start trying to optimise the health of your eggs, uterine health and sperm!

Year of The Yin Water Rabbit

February 13, 2023 Melinda McDonald

2023 denotes the year of the Yin Water (Black) Rabbit which represents prospering, growing, and expanding energy!

"The Year of the Water Tiger signified the end of hibernation, and we woke up – often activated by a catalytic event or events. Emotions and senses stirred which stimulated our consciousness and revealed a path. Now, for the Year of the Water Rabbit, we are fully awake. Like animals foraging in nature, we are all out in the world engaged with our purpose and following the path that was realised last year"

"The rabbit represents thunder shaking the ground, which unlocks our true nature and propels us forward"

The new year begins on January 22nd and the rabbit emerges on February 4th.

Each year, Chinese cosmology consists of 3 aspects, one of:

- 12 Chinese zodiac animals

-  5-elements

- either yin or yang

These 3 aspects provide information about the energetics of the year and contribute to guiding a person in making choices.

This year, like last year, is represented by water setting on top of wood.

What does this mean for you?

Rabbit

  • Represents middle spring and the time 5-7am, when animals emerge from their caves and wag their tails. Powerful Qi builds, expanding with new life energy

  • Personality traits include: Wisdom, ambition, skill, secrecy, and vitality

  • Rabbits run fast but also take time to rest, display gentleness and restore their lively energy in their hidden secure dens

  • Possess great strategic qualities and know when to act or retreat - 2023 holds awesome potential for putting a plan into action

  • The nimble nature of the Rabbit empowers us to maneuver around any obstacles that arise this year - the Rabbits' agility can enable you to let go of old patterns or belief systems that usually hold you back and just do it!

  • Cautious in nature, they do not take risks or fight, allowing you to carefully and considerately move forward and cultivate progress

  • The doors are open and growth is quick

Water

  • Water is the mother of Wood and the Rabbit (like the Tiger last year) is also in the wood family, making the wood aspect especially strong this year too

  • The nature of Water is to flow and accept changes.

  • It provides us with great endurance and supports the active expanding energy of 2023

  • Water, due to it's ability to absorb and resonate, tends to hold a lot of emotion and there can be surges of fear which can overwhelm the Wood energy, creating inaction e.g. flooding a forest.

  • Take care to manage emotion by connecting to the earth and bringing grounding Qi to daily life which controls the emotion of Water

Yin

  • Symbolised by resting, nighttime, moon, female and retreating

  • This helps to balance the active wood element and harmonise the energy of the year

  • Yin represents Mother Earth and feelings of safety, being held, and nurtured, which allows us to navigate the expanding growth of 2023 with an inner stillness

  • Yin Water is the most Yin, signifying gentleness, softness, and the ability to surmount hardness

  • It provides a strong spiritual connection and allows us to tune into the wisdom of the universe

  • Yin water grants us the means to quiet the mind, make a tidal shift, and ultimately distance ourselves from past decisions to create a new trajectory

  • The Yin water of the year gives us wisdom to know our true-selves and show us the most prosperous path for our journey and our partnership with all living beings. This resonates with the compassionate personality of the rabbit, which is yin wood

Health

  • The Rabbit represents strong life energy and an expansion of self

  • It symbolises the time 5-7am, which is a great time to cultivate energy thus this year signifies transformation and a thriving Qi

  • Qigong, yoga or breathing techniques to build vital energy are recommended e.g ‘box breathing’ (breathing slowly, evenly, deeply, smoothly through the nose only in four second segments: in, hold, out, hold)

  • 2023 brings visions which allow us to develop great strategies to make wise decisions while letting go of those belief systems that no longer serve us

  • Take care not to overeat or drink in excess as frustrations can arise that overwhelm the digestion

  • Manage your Liver energy through exercise like swimming and let your ethereal soul (hun) fly freely by allowing your spirit to soar by following your dreams

  • Observing these suggestions ensures a strong defensive system to ward off pathogens and prevent digestive issues like constipation, food cravings and stomach problems

  • Since this year is Yin Water your Kidneys need extra rest. Rejuvenate your energy through napping, getting 8 hours of sleep to avoid edema, difficulty with mobility - especially walking - blood problems, low back pain, poor memory, decreased libido, and infertility

  • The Yin Water Rabbit gifts us with the ability to learn how to harmonise our Qi and solidify our drive for navigating the forward momentum of the upcoming several years.

Foods

  • Eat more steamed green vegetables like kale and spinach.

  • Introduce more sour and fermented foods.

  • Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day to veggies or warm water to facilitate healthy liver and digestive functions.

  • For meat eaters, consider eating more pork and lamb.

  • For those who are adventurous, try making a broth from liver, kidneys, and tendons.

NB. This is very general and may not be appropriate for your individual constitution

Further information

Each Chinese animal is associated with an earthly branch which represents an organ, an acupuncture channel and a weather pattern.

Rabbit is associated with the liver organ, the large intestine channel, and the yang ming (dryness) weather pattern.

Liver Organ

  • The liver governs the tendons, with all the activity expected in 2023, repetitive injuries might occur frequently. Be careful to nourish tendons by eating more protein, eating more oily fish and/or taking (good quality) fish oil supplements, and drinking plenty of water

  • The liver is associated with courage and decision making which is paramount this year. You will be called to engage in life by advancing on your path, evolving into your truest self. Observe all possible options before selecting and moving forward with correct timing.

Large Intestine Channel

  • The Rabbit is associated with the time 5-7am, the large intestine time, symbolised by 'letting go'. A good time, as noted, for cultivation with qigong, yoga and breathing techniques.

  • The Large Intestine moves downward while the Liver rises.

  • If these organs are healthy, the energy in the body flows harmoniously. Anger and resentment block this flow and can cause many problems e.g. respiratory distress, indigestion, constipation, headaches and explosive tempers.

  • Take care to flow with the changes in 2023 and let go of the past!

  • A helpful visualisation is to imagine breathing in clear, bright light universal energy through your lungs and all the pores of your skin, and breathing out the old energy, letting it dissipate into the earth.

Yang Ming Weather

  • The weather pattern of 2023 is dryness e.g. droughts and poor soil integrity.

  • The Yin Water energy can help balance the energies however yang ming can still affect fluids in the environment and in our bodies. Dry skin, bowels, and tissue will be more prevalent so strive to increase fluids.
